Dad’s Appreciating Down Syndrome

Dad’s Appreciating Down Syndrome (D.A.D.S.) is a support group for fathers of children with Down syndrome. D.A.D.S. recognizes that a father of a child with Down syndrome has a unique and distinctive role in raising that child and our mission is to support and assist that father in capitalizing on that uniqueness so they can better care for their child and their family as a whole. D.A.D.S. is currently scheduled to meet once a month at Shield’s in Royal Oak. Please contact Kirk Anderson for more information at kanderson@powerschapman.com

Community Groups, which are led by parent volunteers and receive administrative support and funding from the DSG, provide educational and social opportunities for individuals and families. Our Community groups are a vital extension of the DSG because they enhance the services we provide and keep us informed of our members needs and desires with regards to programming and services.

The benefits of our community groups include helping families by:

  • Providing a forum for discussion of common fears and concerns
  • Alleviating of feelings of isolation and helplessness
  • Providing valuable insights and advice
  • Building successful coping skills

The DSG recognizes our members benefit from opportunities to meet with one another in their immediate communities. In an effort to better serve our members, the DSG currently funds 18 community groups that are lead by dedicated parent volunteers. Groups customize their offerings based on the needs of their participants.

"No one understands the ups, downs and outs of raising a child with Down syndrome the way another parent of a child with Down syndrome does. It has been an invaluable support getting to know these families." - a DSG member
